Also note, that there are maybe a lot of garbage strings in the system console (Ctrl+Alt+F1), if xdm was started with `service xdm start' and sometimes Ctr+Alt+F1-6 didn't switch the user to the desired text terminal. I found these issues with FreeBSD 15.0.
So, to start xdm I'm using this string in the /etc/ttys (sadly, I didn't
remember where I found this line):
ttyv7 "/usr/local/bin/xdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure
This should help if you find the same problems.
