It's unclear to me what happens. Is it the early kernel messages printed
with the bad resolution, or does it switch while printing kernel messages
or is it only X using that bad resolution ?

Can you provide the 'dmesg' output of your laptop ?

Also, when you say "unsupported Intel video card", do you already use any
settings or workarounds (like disabling DRM drivers or manually
configuring X) ?
