        System freezes when changing MAC address

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
        When I try to change the MAC address of my Broadcom BCM4401-B0
        ethernet card without having activated the network interface
        first, my system freezes. There is no kernel oops or panic.
        I am using a Samsung X20 XVM 1730 V laptop running Ubuntu 5.10,
        my kernel version is 2.6.12-10-686.
        When I activate the interface first ("ifconfig eth0 up"),
        deactivate if again ("ifconfig eth0 down"), and then change the
        MAC address, the problem does not occur, even if I remove and
        re-insert the b44 kernel module in between.

[X.] Other notes, patches, fixes, workarounds:
Inserting a lot of "printk"s into b44.c (I'm a newbie), I found out the
following:
- b44_set_mac_addr() gets called (as it should).
- __b44_set_mac_addr() gets called.
- __b44_cam_write() gets called.
- b44_wait_bit() gets called.
- The freeze seems to occur upon calling br32().
- The four calls to bw32() encountered before (one in
  __b44_set_mac_addr(), three in __b44_set_mac_addr()) do not
  produce a freeze.
- The parameters to the critical call to br32() are the following:
    bp = 0xdfb8d220
    reg = 0x428 (= B44_CAM_CTRL)
    [bp->regs = 0xf9080000]
