In looking at the Perl code for the _audit() method in the v1.0.6
"lib/Netdot/Model.pm" Perl module, it appears that only the new or
changed values are recorded in the "Audit" table (along with the
other columns: tstamp, username, tablename, label, operation, and
object_id).

According to the "etc/netdot.meta" file of v1.0.6 the "fields" column
of the "Audit" table records the 'Fields changed' while the "vals"
column records the 'Values that changed', but it might be useful or
at least worth considering to have an additional column, say, "old"
or "old_vals" that would allow post-mortem style investigations for
potential forensic purposes. Does anyone care to discuss this topic?

There is also the concept in the database "industry" of "auditing"
only the "essential" columns (as contrasted with all columns as in
the case of "insert"s in v1.0.6 -- but I may have this point wrong).
Also, I don't see how "delete"s are recorded in the "Audit" table.
I'm not sure how this concept would relate to Netdot, but that also
might be worth a bit of discussion.

Thanks in advance. :-)

Regards,

web...

Yes, I agree that it would make sense to show the old values.

Put it in a ticket, or better yet, send a pull request.

s/show/save/ ??

or

s/show/store/ ??

<grin>

Ticket, yes, -- please accept my apology, but I have trouble with the
whole "pull request" thing -- it is like learning to smoke, I guess,
your first drag makes you very sick and you start coughing wildly!
Later on, smoking becomes second nature... :-)

In some areas, I'm still a luddite, sorry... :-(

Issue #1807 has been reported by William Bulley.

----------------------------------------
Feature #1807: the "audit" system logs changes (inserts/updates) to the
database, but it does not log previous/old values
https://osl.uoregon.edu/redmine/issues/1807

Author: William Bulley
Status: New
Priority: Low
Assignee: Carlos Vicente
Category: Netdot
Target version: 1.0.6
Resolution:

The code in the "lib/Netdot/UI.pm" Perl module _audit() method saves the
new/changed values for any
database change (insert/update), but does not record the old/previous values in
the "Audit" table.

It also is uncler to me how the "audit" feature records "delete" database
operations in the "Audit" table
but I may have missed that in the code.
