First, it may be that you just need about 200 or 300 MBit/s, and you
don't have multiple free PCI slots.

Second is the autonegotiation, ideally one even doesn't need Xover
cables because even this is (should be) autodetected.

But the main reason is marketing - you tell your customer that "the
internet will be 10 times as fast" with gigabit ethernet, and he is
likely to buy it.
