I have been using ipchains for quite some time now and I am in the process
of migrating to IPtables. But I still have one big dilemma. Why do I have to
install special kernel modules to use special protocols like FTP,H323 etc
What is the real issue about these protocols. Why can't NAT handle these
protocols. I mean I tried NAT on a Cisco router and no probs everthing
works.

I ask this question given the fact that many of my friends simply use a
wingate machine as gateway and never encounter these problems. Everything
works fine immediately. Not like me unfortunately I'm still messing around
trying to find why MSN messenger file transfers do not work. I heard there
is a new kernel module to compile.

The even bigger problem right now is that many of these kernel modules have
not as yet been ported to kernel 2.4 which makes my firewall installation
pretty useless. Can anyone help put some light regarding this issue ?

Thanks Keep up the good work

Stefan
