Agreed entirely: I wasn't aware of the mailing list structure. I
appreciate that the costs of installing a dedicated server are
prohibitive.

As you say, this is a matter of principle. However, many
instances/organisations are now forced to scan for viri and spam is
simply an extension of this. Looking at the html code of some of the
spam rejected on my machine, I see that it references runnable Java code
that could be used for compromising the machine on which the browser is
running. One of the spammers had a hidden PUT to register that the
visitor used spam from [EMAIL PROTECTED]

For the rest, thanks for the long and detailed answer. I'm glad you CCed
your answer to the list; at least the others can see what is being done
and that the concerns of the subscribers are being taken seriously.
