My humble opinion is that DHCP is a far more command and standard way of 
configuring machines (especially portable laptops) than using static 
addresses, and the wierd networking system you say you've seen and used at 
some hotel simply scares the willies out of me.

By all means go ahead and try to build your own version, but I wouldn't like 
to have to debug it when things start playing up :-)
