I have also tried, but couldn't get it to work. I think it will work as a player for CD's etc... but I've never been able to sort it to be used for internet content. C2K were aware of this, I'm surprised that Jimmy said it could be used on the unmanaged side. Andrew

Today I was lucky enough to be at a little meeting at the BBC. In this meeting Jimmy Stewart gave a presentation about c2k. In it he described c2k's three main priorities at the moment: 1. The roll out of learningni (to be activated for us all in the next 3 to 4 weeks, post primary schools) 2. The primary LAN contract re-procurement. 3. The software advisory panel* Anyway... The question came up (it was just a matter of time) about Realplayer. A person from the BBC inquired about the provision of realplayer. This is a good question and one I was hoping would come up (although, another very good question would have been "why did the BBC choose something as yuk as realplayer in the first place"). We have heard that c2k have been working on realplayer for some time, basically they are at the moment trying to acquire the full version of realplayer with all the bells and whistles. This kind of makes sense in a "spending public money" way. If you are going to spend money getting it all tested and adjusted for the network then it is probably better to spend a little bit more and get the version with more productivity and functions. Then it came...... Jimmy said "the option to use realplayer has always been there for teachers to use", "it may be an inconvenience, but they can use the unmanaged side". At this point the geek inside me stirred.....and got angry. I did however bite my tongue and did not mention my concern just in case I was being stupid. So here it is...I need help: Has anyone, anywhere, ever, got realplayer to work on the umanaged side of a c2k machine? I have tried and tried. It installs, yes, it works at home, yes, but I CANNOT get it to work in school behind the c2k proxy. I have even played about with the settings in realplayer, directing it to the proxy, changing which ports it looks for. Am I being stupid? Am I missing something? Please help. Stephen PS *At the first software advisory panel meeting, last month, the main issue seemed to be the question of the actual role of the software panel. It was made clear by several representatives that the panels' purpose was not to physically review each suggested software title. It was felt that the software panel should take a more a role which ensures all representatives should agree on future methods and channels for software titles. Basically the panel has a responsibility for "public accountability". It seems the panel might set up a method for software selection that is transparent and agreed upon by all concerned members. The c2k user forum will give guidance to the software panel on this matter. If you would like to express your concerns to the user forum, please do, at www.eduforumni.net or email me. -- The comments above should not be trusted as I believe my computer may have become sentient. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- The opinions expressed are those of the individual and not the school.
