Thanks for the responses.  The follow-up question -- If monitoring the ILS server won't do, does anyone know how I can acquire general-purpose NM SDK code to monitor NM activity?  I will be conducting an experiment with a small group in which I need to monitor who's chatting with whom, what applications are being shared, length of NM session, etc.

It's monitoring the ILS server performance, not NM performance.

If, after you connect to another user through an ILS server, NM
communications are point-to-point, how can the ILS server monitor
performance as described below?

 Performance monitoring
The ILS supports Microsoft Windows NT Server administration features -
including performance monitoring (Perfmon counters), Simple Network
Management Protocol (SNMP) monitoring, and event logs - to measure activity
and system performance. Administration features also include transaction
logs that collect usage statistics, track messages and transactions, and
allow you to examine usage patterns. These tools enable you to proactively
monitor server performance and identify potential problems.
