I am in New Zealand and I routinely conference with my father in
Florida, USA. I usually wear a headset, and he just uses speakers and a
microphone on his monitor. When I talk, I can usually hear what I have
said a few seconds later, as his speakers broadcast it, and his mike
picks it up and sends it back.
When I don't use the headphones, but just the mike and speakers on my
system, the loop continues, and overlaps itself for some time. This
'multiple rebroadcast' takes up a lot of bandwidth, and can paralyze the
video. It helps to interrupt it (by me wearing a headset). After
getting a look at each other, we also usually smile at the camera and
freeze our video sends, leaving more bandwidth for clear conversation,
or application sharing. We restart video send when we want to show
something to each other.
He has a 28.8k modem, and I have a v.90 56k modem.
Does this sound like what you are experiencing?
regards,
Bret
