It sort of depends on the definition of user ( reading the directory
consumes a lot more bandwidth and cpu than logging in). In some situations
with only modest numbers logged in -- but thousands reading the full
directory the bandwidth / cpu will get overwhelmed ( I think this is what
happenend im Microsoft's case when they were running ILS servers)


In an intranet use with modest hardware I would guess a single server would
support thousands ( assuming that large numbers of users didn't constantly
download the directory).
