Let me clarify.

'mynotebook$ host mynotebook' yields the correct ip. This ip is logged in
mynotebook's /var/log/syslog as mynotebook's ip. This ip is also logged in
mydesktop's /var/log/syslog as the ip of the new node that was detected.

'mydesktop$ host mydesktop' yields the correct ip. This ip is logged in
mydesktop's /var/log/syslog as mydesktop's ip. This ip is also logged in
mynotebook's /var/log/syslog as the ip of the new node that was detected.

However,

'mydesktop$ host mynotebook' yields a wrong ip.
'mynotebook$ host mydesktop' yields a wrong ip.

As long as i use the above hostnames in any command (ping, etc), communication
fails. But when i directly use their IPs (taken from /var/log/syslog)
everything
works ok.

Why?

Yes. It's not in there.

Yep.

Will do!
