I am calling attention to, and aiming to lead a couple eyes into the disgusting problem that is the sunsetting and killing of XR devices due to corporate greed. It's apparent that the online nature of many AR/XR devices have led to their becoming useless upon their end of support moment; this is seen in the infamous Google Glass, some Epson Moverios, and I specifically want to highlight, due to timing, the Magic Leap 1 AR glasses.
Once among the most technologically advanced AR offering from the most secretive startup, the Magic Leap 1 now have only a couple of months before being killed off by their developing company; an AR device whose pricepoint has gone from $2300 down to $50 in a small amount of time due to their developer company announcing that they will kill off the product after December 2024, thanks to them disabling server authorization and functionally bricking every device that tries connecting to the servers. This is preposterous not only due to the wasteful nature of letting technology rot and fall into obscurity, but also it's a stab in the back of the people who have trusted this product and the developers to provide a quality service. I long for a centralization of the efforts to salvage XR technology projects and have software stop being the main issue when dealing with these formats in the future, as anyone who has tried to use Google Glass within the last few years knows how much of a set of obstacles you must endure to get anything done. All of this tech and these devices are worth salvaging, it's worth allowing them to live and not forcing them to be a forgotten footnote in XR history, the effort put behind every step of the way to get to the advancements we have nowadays, simply being thrown away by companies who disavow their products and spit in the face of the progress made, is frankly despicable. December 2024 is the deadline for the Magic Leap, but other devices have already had their day, if anyone could help in the efforts to salvage this piece of XR history, I implore you visit the Magic Leap Reddit or Discord; our community is working towards the full study of its board to allow for an HDMI mod, along with beginning efforts to make a custom OS to completely circumnavigate the sunsetting, but this is being hopeful. Fingers crossed we can find a way before December to allow the continued use of this product and start chipping away at the problem that is planned obsolescence in the XR world and avoid yet another device from turning to another grain of sand in the landfill of e-waste that we are forced to live with. Es evidente que la naturaleza online de muchos dispositivos de AR/XR conllevan a su inutilidad una vez que se acaba la vida útil de soporte, ésto se puede notar en los Google Glass, tanto como en algunos Epson Moverio, y específicamente quiero resaltar, debido al tiempo, los lentes Magic Leap 1. En su momento gozaban estar entre las ofertas más avanzadas tecnológicamente de realidad aumentada en el mercado, viniendo de uno de los startups más reservados, el Magic Leap 1 ahora tiene sólo un par de meses antes de que sus desarrolladores maten al producto; un dispositivo de AR cuyo precio bajó de $2300 a $50 en poco tiempo gracias a que sus desarrolladores anunciaran que van a frustrar la funcionalidad del producto en diciembre de 2024, debido a que van a desactivar el acceso a la autorización de sesión a través de sus servidores y efectivamente quedarán bloqueados los dispositivos que intenten conectarse a los mismos. Ésto es indignante no sólo por la naturaleza dispendiosa de dejar que la tecnología se pudra y caiga en el olvido, si no también es una traición al usuario que confió en el producto y en que los desarrolladores le proveerían un servicio de calidad. Ansío una centralización de los esfuerzos para salvaguardar los proyectos de tecnología de XR, y lograr que el software deje de ser el obstáculo principal para poder interactuar con estos productos a futuro, como cualquiera que haya intentado utilizar el Google Glass en los últimos años reconocerá toda la serie de barreras que uno ha de atravesar para poder lograr algo con el dispositivo. Toda esta tecnología y todos estos dispositivos merecen ser salvaguardados, vale la pena permitirles vivir y no forzarlos a ser un pisapapeles olvidado en la historia del desarrollo XR, el esfuerzo que se pone tras cada paso del camino para llegar a los avances que tenemos hoy, simplemente siendo descartados y tirados a la borda por las mismas compañías que dejan huérfanos a sus productos y le escupen en la cara al progreso logrado, es despreciable. Diciembre 2024 es el ultimátum para el Magic Leap, pero muchos dispositivos han tenido ya su día, si cualquiera pudiese ayudar en los esfuerzos para salvaguardar esta pieza de la historia del XR, les inploro visitar el reddit o el discord de Magic Leap; nuestra comunidad está trabajando y estudiando la placa del dispositivo para hacer una modificación que permite conectarle un HDMI, junto con el inicio de los esfuerzos para hacer un sistema operativo personalizado para circunnavegar la situación del bloqueo, pero ésto implica bastante esperanza. Cruzamos los dedos para poder encontrar alguna manera antes de diciembre para permitir el uso continuo de este producto y por lo menos dar unas cinzeladas en el problema que es la obsolencia planeada en el mundo del XR y evitar que un producto más se añada a los granos de arena que llenan los campos de basura electrónica entre los cuales estamos forzados a vivir.
