The compulsive need to drink also springs to mind as a motivation.

Hi Francis,
Your post offers a different perspective; perhaps I misunderstand what
Rhizome is all about...
To plead my ignorance (something I will never now enjoy having rectified;
although more on the reasons for this later); my understanding is that
Rhizome is more than just a chat forum... more than just a 'virtual bar' for
people to congregate and discuss life and the universe in a manner of calm
reflection (or drunken stupor?). My understanding is that Rhizome promotes
itself as "the provider of NetArt News" through articles and works of art
freely contributed (donations) and through the works of a number of regular
unpaid volunteer article and artwork contributors.
The reason I will never have my ignorance confirmed or denied is because
today I visited Rhizome for the first time... none of the links of interest
worked without my first paying a minimum of $10.00 for entry (Australian
currency conversion), something nobody in their right mind would ever pay on
discovering a rather ambiguous and unknown web-site on the Internet. What I
did learn from the site courtesy of the provided hit-counter, was that at
the time of my visit I was the 17th on-line guest, and that of the current
guests, all 17 were anonymous (non-members) presumably experiencing the same
frustrations brought about through a denial of access as myself!
Hardly a site to be bookmarked for future reference IMHO... it might be
great... but I'm not about to pay $10.00 to find out that it's just as
likely to be a load of nonsense.
(PS - Entry into our National Art Gallery is free... entry into art.net and
Olgas Gallery on the web are free... can we really compare Rhizome with
these?)
Best, Don

I find this sort of formulation strange. When people contribute to an
online discussion forum, whether that's Nettime or Rhizome or
Slashdot, are they doing it out of a sense of altruism? Are they
