Maybe there's a hope the rest of the planet can treat the current US regime as a
malfunction and try to route around it. The best case is Bush ending up like
Klaus Kinski in "Aguirre, The Wrath of God"--a Conquistador sailing up the
Amazon on a battered raft, and whose only remaining followers are a tribe of
chattering monkeys.

Speaking of which...why do Homeland Security Officers work in threes?

Piece,

Carl

Point of clarification: Business Week is quite "liberal" by the
standards of the U.S. business press. It's not reflexively
anti-government or even anti-union the way, say, Forbes or the WSJ's
edit page are. Their critique of Bush is a bit stronger than I might
have expected, but not shockingly so.

I'm certainly not privy to the inner deliberations of the American
ruling class, but I don't think Bush & Co. represent its proclivities
or interests. They seem instead to represent an ideological,
sectoral, and geographic minority withing the elite: religious
conservative in ideology, oil and weapons in business, and a
Southern/Texan provincial anticosmopolitan mindset.
