I have a solution that'll work on Solaris 10! While I was bustin' my brains about being stuck on 10 1/06, it came to me: why don't I just play stupid and create an SMF service that brings up a default route on an ip.tunX interface which depends on svc:/network/physical:default being online!
That way, the interfaces will be plumbed, and /etc/defaultrouter continues working "as usual"; no backward compatibility will be broken, and forward compatibility should be OK as well.
