Then I asked to try and telnet on port 80 and issue a "GET / HTTP/1.0" but....with my
surprise, the telnet session was aborted as soon as the user try to type in the first
"G"...
So, I opened the 18080 port on the server's ipfilter, to check if Tomcat would
run or not.
Then I asked the user to try to connect to this port with a browser, and the
Tomcat Welcome page worked perfectly.

Anyone has any idea about what may happen on Apache2 with mobile users?
I know that a mobile internet user is probably natted and proxied somewhere by
mobile gateways. But I cannot figure out what may change on the way the apache
server is contacted....

I'm guessing that things like DNS (the IP address the person connects from maps back to a hostname) and that apache2 ACLs are all fine.

Have you looked in the apache2 log files to see if there are any helpful messages there?

If there is no help there, can you see anything strange by either using snoop or truss?
