Speaking as a NIC driver author working for an IHV, it is a pain to be
constrained to GLDv2 or DLPI. However, having newer, better interfaces
available inside Solaris provides a strong motivation for us to move
forward with getting our driver into Solaris, so that we can use these
consolidation private interfaces.

Also, being able to see and potentially taste the forbidden fruit of
future interfaces that are currently private is frustrating, but the
ability to publicly discuss them, and even to try them out far
outweighs the inability to use them in a shipping product.

I work on both solaris and macosx drivers (and many other
*nixes). Looked at from far away, open solaris is to solaris as darwin
is to macosx. However, I have found the open solaris community to be
much more open, helpful and pleasant to work with than "open" darwin
community. You ask for feedback on future interfaces and features,
rather than wrapping them in NDAs and squelching discussion about
direction on your mailing list. This alone is a breath of fresh air.
Keep up the good work.

Drew
