However, it seems that the IP RCM module *does* use the ifconfig "index"
subcommand today. Specifically, when an interface is offlined, RCM uses
the undocumented ifconfig "configinfo" subcommand to output an ifconfig
command-line that can be later issued to reconfigure the interface once
it's brought back online. The command-line includes "index".
That said, AFAIK, this is not necessary -- that is, there's no need to
restore the old index as part of the "online" operation. I should also
stress that this functionality is not used during a typical DR operation
where a NIC is actually removed from a running system and a replacement
NIC is inserted. (In that case, all links on the NIC are configured by
using /etc/hostname.<if> and /etc/hostname6.<if>, just like at boot.)
I think the RCM parts need some work.
And ifconfig configinfo doesn't seem to be current; the intent of it was
to be able to get the arguments to be able to recreate an interface. But
configinfo doesn't print the zonename, which makes me wonder
1) whether this works with zones
2) whether it is used at all
