Isn't Bonjour "a way to advertise the machine"?
Are you suggesting to have a "Help me" service advertised
so that other machines know that this particular machine is
in trouble? Then I guess we also need to define the conditions
when this "Help me" service got started...

I wouldn't go so far as to create a "Help me" service - wouldn't it be
sufficient to advertise an "ssh" service? A service discovery tool on
another machine would then be able to find the machine.

This is already part of Rishi's plan for service discovery. See PSARC 2005/561 Multicast DNS and Service Discovery.

If so instructed, Mac OS X will advertise ssh using Bonjour (as
_ssh._tcp.).

Yep.
