not sure why you are seeing this. I just tested the same thing (albeit 
on an snv_57 based machine), and after reboot I get:

# ndd -get /dev/e1000g0  max_frame_size
16384

also, the mtu command works as expected.. are you certain that the interface
is otherwise plumbed and set up correctly? What is the output for the 
'ndd -get' command in your case?
