I agree that the reference on that man page is vague. I've always assumed that it was just meant to show a real example of a file that can be used by autopush. I've never assumed that it implied that we could/should modify iu.ap ourselves.
At any rate, it seems like a moot point, at least in my case. Since doing a generic autopush for the TCP/UDP connections doesn't necessarily work (due to the inverse_autopush issue mentioned before), we have to have to continue to use our own program to do the configuration.
