Nope.  Didn't help.

Actually this is my mother's machine.  She has been using it for almost a year, 
never had any problem.  The problem started when I, sua sponte, tried to change 
the hostname from the default "unknown" to something less idiotic.  I 
immediately changed back (by removing the /etc/nodename file), but the problem 
persists.

I think somehow the hostname "unknown" must have been cached somewhere.  And, 
as I discussed in my reply to Ignacio, this problem might have been associated 
with the e1000g NIC.  But I have no idea.

Any further help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks again.
