I don't think that one "counts."  RFC 1123 (published in 1989) was
already pretty well established when libmapid was invented.  That's
just a simple bug.

Otherwise, companies such as "3com.com" would be highly
inconvenienced.  ;-}

Unfortunately, the software base is littered with parsers that believe
they know something about IP addresses.  Those that make mistakes run
into trouble.  And people inventing new parsers sometimes make new
mistakes as well.

Some of these bugs are ancient and some are either hard to solve or
just never will be solved -- for example, CR 1209402.

But I think that at least some of the 1123 support started with SunOS
4.1, so I suspect the real question is: if you could find such a
version, what would you do differently?
