Before we wander too far down this discussion, let's not forget
that we are only talking about a very small set of "tunables"
that have snuck into ndd to allow engineers to troubleshoot problems,
and these were never really intended for the average customer to
be resetting on a daily basis. IOW, we really are talking about the
"kids, don't try this at home" set of back-doors.
