One more note: since James pointed in his blog to the RFCs, I reread it. I think now that my expectation that the source IP address value should influence the choice of next-hop router is related to this clause of RFC1122:

It was my subconscious understanding that while the system is solving the task of sending a routed packet to a gateway (choosing the gateway in particular), it is working in the sandbox of the "connected network" (as the system and gateway are in the same subnet).
