I've actually used that to good effect in the past when setting up an interface intentionally marked down. It's usually more obvious, though, to do something like this: $ cat > /etc/hostname.e1000g0 <<EOF 10.0.0.1/24 broadcast + down EOF In any event, the behavior is legacy. It's just "always" worked that way.
