Yes the commands you suggested indicate that nwam is running. Nwam is set in "automatic" mode. When
switching to manual mode there is an "Activate on boot" option in the "Interface
properties" window:

I've never tried it (my setup is from way before this was implemented ;),
but "activate at boot" seems fairly obvious to me. Try it!
It doesn't make sense to have this option disabled in automatic mode.
