Yes, that's exactly how it works.  It allows you to select the forced
mode by setting all of the higher-speed advertised capability bits to zero.

Good to hear!  I should have guessed that this was a potential problem,
but I just "assumed" that you'd set the unwanted bits to zero.  Sorry
about that.
