This might be a significant part of the problem. NetworkManager CVS right now needs Dbus at least 0.31 (and 0.31 wouldn't hurt). I don't think the gentoo backend has been updated that recently offhand, so you may see similar problems as I had with the Debian backend later on. See my Debian backend patch for hints on how to fix that.
