My 5 cents:

In the applet drop-down list: substitute dot='.' for non-printable
characters.

When you enter ssid ("Network Name"), allow the usual backslash escapes
like \t, \\, \0, \0123. Bonus points if some sort of indication appears in
the dialog the first time you type backslash.
