Or use the command 'startx -- -bpp <X>' where <X> is the bitdepth you'd
like to use.

After you find one you like, add a line 'DefaultColorDepth <X>' to
/etc/X11/XF86Config in the final stanza (whichever one is appropriate
for the Xserver you're using).
