I believe the commandline is "startx --start -bpp 32" experiment and put what works into your /etc/profile as an alias ("alias startx=")  OR you can append the --start option to your /etc/X11/Xclients file.
 
I would confirm this, but I'm on my way to work, and I don't have time to boot into Linux  ;) 
 
 
Also, try putting the following in your XF86Config file:
 
DefaultDepth 32
 
This is assuming you want 16.8 million colors - you might want '16' for 65,536 instead.

using mandrake 5.2 with susconfig and renditon rpm from xservers from mandrake cd
 
I have a diamond stealth s220 and it says its capable of running in 16 and 24 bpp
but it always shows in 8 bpp
i tried running startx --bpp 16 but that didnt work either
 
also when i try to dial it always says my modem is busy it set on the correct com (cua2)
I am pretty sure that its not a winmodem
