Are you using twisted pair, or coax? If the former, you probably don't have
a crossover cable. Follow the link below to see how to make one on your own,
or get one at a local computer store or mail order.

that plug onto one end of your standard straight-through cable and convert
it to a twisted cable w/o replacing one end.
