Please have pity on another chuckleheaded windows user.
This is my second try at getting into Linux. My first attempt with RH
5.2 was unsuccessful. I'm a busy CEO and a windows user and I just ran
out of time.
I'm now trying Mandrake 6.0 which I downloaded and burned onto a cd.
I've installed Linux for Windows and it works ok but only in low
resolutions on my Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 67TXV monitor using a generic
video setting. My Video card is a Jaton 740 AGP-3D card. I've
downloaded the XBF740 server from redhat, and then I found the same X
server on my CD as part of the Mandrake 6 distribution.
My problem is (I think) that even after I have installed it according to
the readme instructions supplied by Red Hat, Xconfig86 does not list the
two supported cards mentioned in the readme, nor gives me the option of
the XBF740 server. I've checked the cards file for the new xconfig and
it lists a generic i740
card.
I think what is happening is that when I attempt to start the new
version of xconfig86, even as root from within the directory I installed
it in, it pulls up the old list, or it is the old version of Xconfig86.
Can someone please tell me where these files should be put so that
Mandrake "sees" them, are there configuration files to edit and where
are they in Mandrake 6? The XBF740 server is in the location specified
by redhat's readme, but none of the other servers are in the same place.
If I can't get it right this time I guess I will just have to wait
another six months. I will switch our business machines to Linux, but
only after I can demonstrate to myself and my staff that we can use it
effectively.
