I also have similiar problems with my via-rhine dlink dfe-530 tx NIC. I have
tried
1. using the built in driver but the card can not be found by the probe
during installation
2.downloading the driver source code compiling.

after which I then configure the card and eth0 setting

All of these cause errors, usually the card can not be initialised during
bootup.

Weeks later I gave up and bought a 3com NIC and NO MORE problems.

If you decide to continue here is the source code
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/via-rhine.c
and a really good starting point for all NIC problems any brand or model.
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/
good luck

Steve

p.s. if you do get it to work let the list know
