What you do is type in your root password.
Once you are at the prompt (#:) you type in the following:

# fsck /dev/hda1  (don't type the #)

(or whatever partition you want such as /dev/hda2, /dev/hda3)
Be sure to check all your ext2 partitions..
If errors are found just say you want to fix them with "y".
