Well, first, raise an x-term and type
modemtool
And identify your modem in the GUI boxes

Once that is done, if the modem is reasonably standard, try
Kmenu [Internet ] {Kppp}  on the menu

When Kppp puts its dialog box on the screen, choose setup

Now here is the tricky part...

Does your ISP use a login script or PAP?  Chances are it is PAP.  Mine uses a CHAT script, but most use PAP these days.  Try the settings for PAP first....  If that doesn't work, then try the chat script (expect ogin: send loginname, expect word: send password)

Now the only other settings likely to be of concern are some DNS addresses (Domain Name Servers).  Usually, these are supplied by your ISP with a quick phone call.  If not, you should be able to run

traceroute 198.83.19.241

in an x-term and pick some IP addresses from the servers near the internet backbone, but get them from your ISP if you possibly can.

OK, the method of changing display settings is as follows:

Go to a console by logging out or ctrl-alt-f2-6  (any one of those 5 f keys)

Type

Xconfigurator

Set up your display again, but REJECT the default setting and say you want to choose the display settings yourself.

Mark all the settings you plan to use with the tab key and space bar.

Please note, if you choose 640x480 at 8-bit color depth and also choose 1024x768 at 8, then
whenever you are at 8 bit depth(256 colors) your screen will be sized to 1024x768.  If you use 640x480, that 1024x768 image will scroll when you move the mouse to the edge of the screen.

When the XF86Config file has been written and Xconfigurator completes, restart your X server.  Now all the resolutions and color depths you have chosen should be accessible by ctrl-alt-+ and ctrl-alt--(minus), no restarts required.

Generally speaking, this system is a bit unwieldy.  The windows setting is like a GUI version of Xconfigurator with the data known for display type and screen size.  (Interesting project for someone in Python with Tkinter?).

What is the easiest way to configure dial up networking toconnect to an ISP using 6.0.  I still haven't figured outwhere the display properties are to change the size ofthe screen. Thanks for your help, Jason
