I have tried attachments in Mozilla mailer and KMail saved to disk and opened in OpenOffice.
Now I DO remember a problem where someone would get a document as an attachment and forward it in-line that would result in a short plain text AHEAD of the document in its proprietary format which would make the message of the attachment unrecoverable, but that is a screw-up on the sending end where things are not precisely RFC 822. Usually that is where someone lazy just right-clicks the document and hits the "Send" button with an option to type a comment rather than a subject. And even Word has trouble with that. Civileme
