Well, I sure would hope I do not have a hardware deficiency since this is a brand new Athlon XP 1600+ with 512 megs of ram. I ordered extra cooling besides. The sound from the CD was absolutely great right away. I now have xmms working and mpg123 working just fine . It might have been a bios problem all along and I now think that I truly did not need to purchase the sound driver if I had known. I went into the bios and turned off plug and pray , freed up the irq's, turned off the power management, etc, and tried to put the ethernet on a different irq but it will not work on the others I tried such as 9, 10, or 11. As you can see, the ethernet and audio are sharing the irq. As of now, for some reason it is not presenting a problem anymore. I was able to use the net and play as many tunes on xmms as I wished without them stopping. The only problem I am having at this time is that the startup system sounds do not work except in root. I think that has to be a permissions problem or something. The startup music for LM8.2 sounded terrible-alot of static, from root, but all of the music from CD, and mp3 players sound good. If it is a permission problem how would I change that properly? If not, what could it be? Thanks very much for your help John and Tom. I appreciate it. At least I have some quality sound now so progress is being made. How, exactly did you install and setup alsa? I would like to try this to see if it works even though I purchased the commercial product already. I would like to compare the two. Thanks again for your info and help. Marcia ------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE: I thought everything was working well but the music is stopping after a few minutes again. I cannot seem to find another irq to work with my ethernet card so it does not share with my audio. Any suggestions? Thanks, Marcia
