If you want to work on PDF files directly, it's tricky - the only tool I know of is pdfopt, which optimises PDF files. If you want to do clever things with PDF files, convert them to PostScript files with pdftops, then you can manipulate them in various ways using programs like psresize, psbook etc. (type "ps" then hit the tab key to see what's available). there are also alot of downloadable PostScript tools.
If, on the other hand, you are interested in creating PDF documents from scratch, you're best tool is probably LyX (I know I plug LyX ad nauseam on this list, but it really is a great program - get into it and you'll never want to use a conventional word processor again). Either use it to produce PDF files directly, or output PostScript and use the other tools to manipulate it. Sir Robin
