If you installed OO from the .tar.gz file, it installed in the directory you specified, most likely under /usr/share/OpenOffice.org or something like that. The problem is that that directory is not in your path. You have two solutions, either add it to your path or create symlinks under /usr/bin (which is in your path). Actually, there is a third option - download and use the Mandrake RPMS for OO and you won't have to worry about it. The links will show in your menu and the program files will be in /usr/bin.
