Sawaddee: About your modem: Your modem is _probably_ a winmodem. If you are not familiar with that term, it refers to modems that are designed to work under Windows -- and Windows only. If you had posted this question two years ago, you would have been told that your modem won't work under Linux, and your only remedy was to buy a real modem. But this is 2002, and as a result of the efforts of some very smart and dedicated people in the open source community, suitable drivers have been developed for many winmodems. Here are two excellent sources of information: linmodems.org www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html Before you go there, you'll need to have some more information about the chip set used in your modem. Rockwell does not manufacture modems; rather they manufacture the chip sets that are sold to the companies that actually manufacture the modems. It isn't always easy to decipher exactly which modem and chip set that you have. Typical Rockwell chipsets are the HCF and HSF families, but there are others. The FCC ID number (usually it's on a paper sticker on the card) can be a big help. If you find the FCC number, you can learn a great deal more about your modem at www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/. Mandrake 8.1 includes Bastille, which is a good tool for installing and configuring your system's security. Also, Mandrake has some very good articles at http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs.php#papers. -- cmg
