Just to follow up my own post (humour me !), installed the Xfree 3.3.5
packages from sunsite's 6.1 mirror (incidentally, the Mandrake site
specifically states 6.1 is not out yet, yet sunsite don't have anything but
6.1 and 6.1b !?!) and then managed to force the Neomagic 128 option of the
SVGA server to work by telling X that my card was a 128 with a 2200 chipset
rather than a 256ZX.

After telling it to use the external display we have a rather lovely
1024x768 display at 16bpp.

Unless anyone has any better suggestion (ie a server specifically for the
256ZX) then don't worry about my original post.

Martin.
