You're doing just fine. It's very rare for a linux system to get a bug. Really. Consider that most bugs out there are written by young people that live in Windows. They can't write bugs for linux because they're not familiar with the OS; and it's significantly harder to write a program or a script to harm a linux (or other unix) machine - best way to hurt a linux box is directly attacking the ports with DoD/DoS and other port jamming strategies...IF they work... So, all in all, you don't have much to worry about.
