There could be several reasons why this is happening, but overall, one
thing you can do is to make sure you have the latest video drivers for
your graphics adaptor - that helps in and of itself; second is to make
sure that you have only the services running that you WANT to have
running. Thirdly, is to either let updatdb run, or start it manually -
this is a db of every single file in your file system - when the db is
kept up to date, then disk access is far faster overall.

Alot of performance issues can be related to so many different things -
so starting at the beginning and eliminating possibles helps to narrow
down the field a bit.

Try all of the above first and then let us know how that goes...
