you were right.  I should have thought of it from that point
of view.  But even when I do a hdparm test on the 
individual drives, I still get very low readings.  The 
drives are both set with basically everything turned off,
including DMA.  When I try to turn it on, it still tells
me that I am not permitted to use DMA on these drives.
Why would that be do you think.  I know what you are 
saying, regarding the trustworthyness of the results in
real world use, but the examples of other software raid
systems have all used the hdparm test to check results,
and they have shown an increase in throughput over 
the single drive setup.  There must be something wrong
here??!!
Maybe I should just forget about it, and go back to 
the normal method.  I have deffinately not seen an
improvement in speed, and can notice that it is 
slightly more sluggish at the moment.  It is just strange,
as this method is supposed to improve performance.
