I am rather new to Linux and have this problem: I purchased the update cd recently for a up and running 8.2 system and managed to update the kernel to 2.4.18-7(from 6) showing now on reboot and I was told any other packages were installed or updated. But I only reach the log in lines and any graphical window manager or log in screen does not start. In other words, I never reach the window where I get to choose a user etc. ( I also see it switches to runlevel 3)
Is there something I should type in at the prompt besides root and password? Hope this makes sense.
