    OTOH, I'm connecting thru a NIC and router (ATU-R), often called a 
adsl modem.

 tom$ frpm dhcp
dhcp-client-3.0-2pl2.3mdk
dhcp-common-3.0-2pl2.3mdk

   No problems, works great.
